Leaders of Sammilito Parishad, a platform which is contesting the BGMEA polls, on Thursday said they do not want to advise political parties but requested them to solve the political crisis politically through dialogue instead of enforcing hartals.
“We don’t want to advise political parties. We request to solve the crisis politically and through dialogue. We don’t expect hartal as it harms the economy,” panel leader M Atiqul Islam told reporters at a press conference at Sonargaon Hotel.
President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, former BGMEA presidents Tipu Munshi, MP and Abdus Salam Murshedy were, among others, present.
The press conference was arranged to share their plan for the development of the country’s readymade garment sector ahead of the BGMEA election. The election is billed for March 10.
Asked about their priority areas if elected, Atiqul Islam said they would give priority to infrastructure development, resolving gas and electricity crises, ensuring workers safety, boosting efficiency and taking care of environmental issues.
He said they will have special focus on cutting the bank interest rate as the sector is losing competitiveness globally for various limitations. “I’ll try to utilise my 26 years of experience in the RMG sector for further development of the sector,” he said.
Earlier, Murshedy introduced Atiqul Islam and said, “He’s truly a tested person. He got global award from Wal-Mart.”
He also said all the Sammilito Parishad panel members are committed and ready to work for the RMG sector’s development.
