Pop Guru’s death anniversary observed

The second death anniversary of Azam Khan, the pioneer of pop music in the country, was observed in a befitting manner in the city on Wednesday.To mark the day, Azam Khan Foundation, his family and different cultural organisations held commemorative meetings, qulkhani, doa and milad mahfil in the city.
Azam Khan was addressed as ‘Pop Guru of Bangladesh’. The guru, together with pop music contemporaries like, Firoz Shai, Ferdous Wahid, Fakir Alamgir, Najma Zaman and Pilu Mamtaj, is credited with pioneering and popularising Bangla pop music.
Azam Khan’s real name is Mahbubul Haque Khan. He was born on February 28 in 1950. He was a valiant and fought for the country against the in the in 1971.
After the independence, Azam Khan entered the music arena. He founded a band named Uchcharon in the early 1970s. His first concert on television was aired in 1972 on the BTV.
Azam Khan could have won the hearts of millions by rendering some popular numbers like ‘Ore Saleka, Ore Maleka’, ‘Jibone Kichhu Pabona Re’, ‘Ami Jare Chaire’, ‘Ashi Ashi Bole Tumi’, ‘Obhimani’, ‘Rail liner bostite’, ‘Hei Allah Hei Allah Re’, ‘Alal O Dulal’ and so on.
The Pop Guru will remain alive in the hearts of the music-lovers for his popular albums like ‘Didi Maa’, ‘Bangladesh’, ‘Keu Nai Amar’, ‘Mixed Album’ and ‘Neel Noyona’.
Azam Khan breathed his last at the age of 61 at Dhaka CMH hospital on 5 June 2011. He had been suffering from oral cancer.
