Dhaka – Terming haors, baors and wetlands as the lifeline of the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday stressed the need for proper utilisation of these resources for the betterment of people.

“Bangladesh is a riverine country and haors, baors and wetlands are the lifeline and resources of the country. We’ll have to properly utilise these resources,” she said while addressing the first advisory council meeting of the Department of Bangladesh Haor and Wetland Development held at her office.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
Putting emphasis on the water resources, she said once upon a time, there was no tendency to create obstacles to the flow of the rivers and common rivers, but nowadays many countries are creating obstacles to free flow of rivers.
Highlighting the importance of continuing river dredging throughout the country, the Prime Minister said that before the 2nd World War, the rivers in the country underwent regular dredging and now her government is going on with such dredging.
