Pro-AL Chhatra League names 16 leaders for unacceptable role

Dhaka, May 16 – Ruling Awami League’s affiliated organization Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has named 16 leaders for their controversial roles and they will be suspended if they fail to prove wrong the allegations brought against them.
Golam Rabbani, General Secretary of BCL on Wednesday disclosed those names at a press briefing at Awami League’s (AL) president’s political office at Dhanmondi after getting instruction by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also chief of the organization.
“As per instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina we have named 16 leaders who are accused in cases and controversies. We are giving ththem 24 hours to prove themselves innocent. Otherwise we will suspend them from BCL committee,” said Golam Rabbani.
Before the press briefing BCL president Reaznul Chowdhury Shovon and Rabbani discussed the issue with Awami League joint general secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman.
BCL president Shovon said that we not only take action against the controversial leaders but also against those leaders who tarnished BCL’s image.
Earlier, PM Sheikh Hasina instructed BCL top brasses to solve issue. She gave the directives to Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak at a meeting at the Gono Bhaban on Wednesday.
Hasina asked Shovon to drop the “controversial” leaders from the committee if the allegations against them are found true, sources of BCL sources told journalists.
Golam Rabbani said, one name Paradip Chowdhury was by mistake dropped from the list joint-secretary of the new BCL central committee. Allegation against him was affiliation with Islami Chhatra Shibir, which was impossible. As he belongs to hindu community, he can’t be and activist of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, Golam Rabbani added.
Earlier on Monday the BCL announced its 301-member central committee, touching off controversy and demonstrations by some of those who could not make it to the new committee. It was formed a year after the BCL’s 29th national council on May 11-12 last year.
On July 31 last year, the AL chief nominated Shovon as BCL president and Golam Rabbani as general secretary. – Staff Reporter
