Little progress in Tavella killing case investigation

There is no visible progress into the killing case of Italian national Cesare Tavella though three days have already elapsed as the investigating agency is still in dark about the killers as well as motive behind the killing.

Cesare Tavella, 50, Project Manager for PROOFS (Profitable Opportunities for Food Security) of the Netherlands-based non-governmental organisation ‘ICCO Cooperation’, was shot dead by some miscreants in the city’s Gulshan area on Monday evening.

Heleen Van Der Beek, country Representative of ICCO Cooperation, Bangladesh Officer, filed the case with Gulshan Police Station on Monday night. Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan police has been investigating the case as it was transferred to DB on Tuesday from Gulshan police station.

“Still we don’t have any specific motive behind the killing as well as any clue of the killers, who were directly involved in the killing,” said Joint Commissioner (DB) Monirul Islam on Thursday after visiting the killing spot in Gulshan.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DB-West Mahbubul Alam, who has been leading a 11-member special DB team to assist investigation into the case, was also present.

The Joint Commissioner (DB) said it is the big challenge at the moment for us to find out the killers to bring them under the law of the land. “ We have been investigating into the case giving most importance. Other agencies have also been working in this regard,” he added.

When asked about the number of suspects took part in the killing mission, the Joint Commissioner (DB) Monir, who also head of a special investigation team formed by the police headquarters to unearth mestery behind the killing, said they are not yet sure about the number of suspects.

However, he said it must be more than one suspect as the eye witnesses said they saw three suspects fleeing from the scene. The killers, who involved in the incident, occurred the killing as part of pre-planned, the JC (DB) added.

Monir said the investigators have been carried out their investigation keeping in mind in several factors reason behind the killing, including professional enmity, personal or relationship and even Islamic militant group IS connection though we are yet to confirm about their statement claiming the responsibility in the killing.

We also investigating whether 3rd party was involved in the killing to fall the government in discomfort situation or not, Joint Commissioner (DB) Monir added.
