Appreciating deescalation of political tension in Bangladesh, European Union (EU) Ambassador in Dhaka Pierre Mayaudon on Monday said the progress looks ‘fragile’ and encouraged more confidence-building measures and dialogue among the interlocutors to address the ‘core issues’.“Luckily we observe…we’re in the phase of deescalation (of political tension). We know there’s a progress but the progress is fragile,” he said while talking to diplomatic correspondents at hotel Lakeshore in the city.
The diplomat also said they always encourage their interlocutors and political parties to go forward into more confidence-building measures and dialogue to address the core issues.
He also said the recently held city corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong also facilitated towards deescalation of political tensions.
The EU Ambassador said they had seen escalation of violence since January 14 followed by three-month blockade and hartals when ‘innocent people were targeted’. “We met the Foreign Minister and voiced our concerns.”
Responding to a question on human rights issue, he said the issue is on the top of their agenda but did not make any comment directly on Bangladesh’s human rights situation.
On the increasing price of RMG products, he said it has been discussed already it will be further discussed with the brands.
He said they might have some ideas but ultimately it is the responsibility of the private sectors buyers and brands. “I’m very confident that they’re ready to increase the price.”
