Project to check air pollution in Dhaka and Chittagong

Dhaka, Jan 9 – Environment and Forest Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud on Tuesday said the government is implementing clean air and sustainable environment (CASE) project to check air pollution in Dhaka and Chittagong.“Various activities including development of infrastructure, research, air pollution monitoring and air pollution control have taken under the project,” said the minister while responding to a question placed by treasury bench lawmaker M Mamunur Rashid Kiron of Noakhali-3 at the Jatiya Sangsad here.
Under the project, a total of 11 Continuous Air Quality Monitoring Station (CAMS) have been installed for regular monitoring of the air pollution quality at eight populous city including Dhaka and Chittagong, said the minister.
In addition to this, initiative is underway to install CAMS at more five important cities under the project, he added.
Besides this, the government has taken an initiative to transform the conventional brick kilns into modern and equipped ones through implementing the Brick Manufacturing and Brick Kilns Establishment (Control) Act 2013, he said, adding that “it will help check the air pollution created by the brick kilns in the country including Dhaka and Chittagong.”
The Environment Department has taken various activities including filing cases at the Environment court and operating mobile court along with enforcement programme against illegal brick kilns and implementing the act.
As a result, around 65.20 per cent brick kilns have already transformed into modern technology across the country till December 2017, said the environment minister. – Agency
