RAB orders probe of complaint about abduction

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has formed a probe body to look into the alleged involvement of its personnel in the abduction and murder of seven people, including a city corporation councillor and a lawyer, at Narayanganj.
RAB’s Director General Mokhlesur Rahman said that a four-member committee headed by the force’s Additional Director Aftabuddin Ahmed has been formed to look into the abductions and killings of the seven abductees.“The decision to form the committee came after a discussion today (Monday) following media reports. The committee has been directed to probe it and submit a report as soon as possible,” the RAB chief said.
On Apr 27, seven including Narayanganj City Corporation councilor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar were abducted from the city’s Adalatpara area. Three days later, their bodies were found in the Shitalakkhya river.
From the very first day, Islam’s family blamed another councillor Nur Hossain and Shiddhirganj Awami League’s general secretary Haji Md Yasin Miah for the abductions.
On Sunday, the slain councillor’s father-in-law Shahidul Islam alleged that the RAB had taken Tk 60 million from Nur Hossain and his accomplices to carry out the abductions and killings.
He said eyewitnesses to the abduction on Apr 27 told him that there was a car at the scene marked RAB-11.
According to Shahidul Islam, the Narayanganj police did not accept his case over the abduction accusing RAB-11 members including the commanding officer (CO).
The CO of RAB-11 and Naraynganj’s Superintendent of Police were withdrawn on Apr 30, when the bodies were found. The following day the district’s deputy commissioner was removed.-bdnews24.com
