Heavy monsoon showers lashed the capital on Wednesday causing immense miseries to city dwellers as well as those who are on their way home to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
As Wednesday was a public holiday, the city dwellers who were scheduled to leave the city by buses or trains sufferred a lot as many of them found it difficult to get transports for their respective railway stations or inter-district bus terminals due to the incessant rainfall.Witnesses said passengers, who were scheduled to catch the train at Kamalapur railway station, sufferred most as most of the streets around the station went on under rainwater.
A large number of CNG-run-auto rickshaws went out of order on several city streets due to the inundation of their engines, exacerbating the passengers’ sufferings.
People in many areas had to wade through the water-logged streets. Water stagnation was reported from areas like Pallabi bus stand, Kazipara, Shanitanagar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Rajarbagh, Merul Badda, Maidhya Badda, near Rampura bridge, Gulapsha Mazar, Victoria Park to Sadarghat, Mohakhali, New Airport Road while many other areas went under knee-deep water due to the downpour.
Officials at different bus counters in the city and Kamlapur railway station said the passengers faced difficulties to reach their respective rail stations and bus counters in time due to the heavy shower.
Mahruf Bhuiyan, who wanted to leave the capital on Wednesday for his hometown Feni, told UNB that he was forced to change his travel plan due to the incessant rain.
“Though I have no ticket, I wanted to go home by train today but the rain didn’t give me any scope to do so. Now I’ve decided to start my home journey on Thursday morning,” he added.
“Passengers are reaching the counter almost in scheduled time braving the heavy shower,” counter master of Hanif Paribahan’s Kallyanpur counter Masudur Rahman told jpurnalists.
He, however, noted that although buses left the city in due time, the return trips will be delayed due to the heavy rainfall.
The rain that began in the morning flooded many of the city streets while home-goers underwent unbearable sufferings for unavailability of vehicles.
According to the Met Office, 62 millimetres rainfall was recorded in the capital from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm on Wednesday.- UNB
