A five-member core committee, headed by Chairman of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipaksha (RAJUK) Engr Nurul Huda to identify risky mills and factories with the Rajuk area, BGMEA president M Atiqul Islam said here on Thursday.Other Committee members are Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) president AKM Selim Osman, Head of BUET Civil Engineering Department Prof Mujibur Rahman, former BGMEA first vice president M Fazlul Azim, MP, and BGMEA president M Atiqul Islam.
“The committee has already started its work and there’s no timeframe to complete the job,” Atiqul Islam said at a press conference at the BGMEA Bhaban Thursday evening.
Former BGMEA presidents M Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin and Abdus Salam Murshedy, and BGMEA second vice president SM Mannan Kochi were, among others, present.
The BGMEA president also said that a technical committee has also been formed to assist the core committee. “Rajuk member (planning) Sheikh Abdul Mannan has been made convener of the committee.”
Representatives from the BGMEA, BKMEA, BUET and BRTC are in the technical committee, he said.
Atiqul Islam said they are opening a cell in the BGMEA Bhaban to identify the risky buildings. “We’re hiring 10 engineers for the BGMEA and interviewing BUET engineers.”
Responding to a question, he said that so far, over Tk 5 crore has been deposited in the Disaster Management Fund of the BGMEA.
Today (Thursday), workers of five factories deposited their one month’s salary in the fund — Interco Fashion (Tk 1.85 lakh); Interco Design (Tk 2 lakh); Perfect Fashion (Tk 1 lakh); Azmat Fashion (Tk 4 lakh); Far East Dresses Ltd (Tk 3 lakh); and Z-3 Composite Ltd (Tk 3 lakh).
