‘Ramphal coal-fired plant putting Sundarbans in crossfire’

Noted columnist Syed Abul Maksud said the move to set up 1320MW coal-fired power plant at Rampal adjacent to the Sundarbans in Bagerhat district is an attempt to put the Sundarbans in crossfire and criticised the governmen for the same.
He urged the government to stop building any kind of establishment near the Sundarbans that can endanger its ecology and environment.Abul Maksud came up with the call while addressing a national conference to protect the Sundarbans, organized by the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port at Jaitya Press Club.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Anu Mohammad of Jahangirnagar University, and also the member secretary of the Oil-Gas Committee, said the consequences of setting up any establishment like Rampal power plant near the Sundarbans will be devastating for the country and the loss will irreparable.
He also alleged that the government is serving the interest of some multinational companies among with neighboring country India rather than serving the interest of the people.
Speakers also said the committee is not against any development work of government but against any decision which dooms the country.
Chaired by Oil-Gas Committee convener Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah, the conference was also addressed by economist MM Akash and Workers Party central leader Bimal Biswas, among others.- UNB
