Dhaka, 11 Dec – The investigation committee formed earlier on the attack on minority people in Rangpur following a derogatory Facebook post confirmed that Titu Roy had posted the status with his own account.“The probe body got evidence that Facebook ID of Titu Roy was alright and he gave the derogatory status from using this ID,” said Rangpur Additional District Magistrate (ADM) and head of the probe committee Abu Rafa Md Arif.
He said the probe body, formed one month ago, would submit its report later this month.
As asked whether they found involvement of other persons with posting the defamatory status on religious faith that provoked the local people in carrying out attacks on Hindu community people, he declined to comment and said he cannot speak more for the sake of investigation.
The controversial Facebook post that triggered the communal attack on the Hindu houses in Rangpur’s Thakurpara village.
The status defaming religion had been posted on the Facebook page of Titu Roy on November 5. One businessman Raju Ahmed lodged a case against him with Gangachara police station in the district on the following day.
On November 10, several thousand Muslim devotees staged a demonstration in the area protesting the derogatory FB status.
Coming out from the rally, an unruly mob vandalized the village and torched a number of homes of Hindu community members at Thakurpara area creating panic among them.
The law enforcement officials chased the attackers and at one point of the chase and counter chase law enforcers fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to control the situation.
One died, six were injured, more than 30 homes belonging to Hindu families were ransacked and looted before being set on fire.
Police had detained 47 more suspects in connection with the communal attack on Hindu houses at Thakurpara village.
The total number of arrestees over the incident now stands at 100.
Police filed two cases in this connection with Kotwali and Gangachara police stations following the incidents.
Additional police super of Rangpur Fazle Elahi said they are investigating the incidents.
“Police has been deployed in the village. The law and order is under our control,” he said.
He said two accused have given a confessional statement under section 154 of the CrPC.
Replying to a question, he said it would take time to submit charge sheets of the cases as they have to identify the attackers and get more confessional statements from the accused. – Staff Reporter
