Rangpur records bumper Haribhanga mango output

The farmers of Rangpur witnessed a bumper production of over 21,000
tonnes of the fibre-less, fleshy and tasty local variety Haribhanga
mango worth over Taka 160 crore this year, official sources said here
today.
Sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said harvest
of the aristocrat Haribhanga mango has already been completed in the
district making the farmers happier with excellent market prices of
their produce this season.
Talking to journalists, Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khandker Md
Mesbahul Islam said that over 5,800 farmers cultivated the mango in
5,500 hectares land in some 3,800 small, medium and big orchards and
homesteads this time and achieved bumper production.
Deputy Director of the DAE Feroz Ahmed said that cultivation of high
quality Haribhanga mango has been increasing every year in the
district as hundreds of farmers already achieved economic
self-reliance in four upazilas here in recent years.
The mango is largely being cultivated in many orchards in Podaganj,
Khoragach Purbopara, Khoragach Paschimpara, Ruposhi, Zarullapur,
Rangatipara, Bangaon, Chaker Pather, Paikarerhat, Rukniganj, Siraj,
Tekani, Moyenpur, Kadamtola, Lalpukur, Shukurerhat, Sikarpur,
Fulchowki, Tilakpara, Kashimpur, Ucha Balua, Matherhat and other
villages in Mithapukur upazila.
Besides, the mango is being cultivated in Kutubpur, Arunnesa, Nataram,
Rustamabad, Nagerhat, Chowpothirhat, Kanchabari, Gopalpur, Baroghoria,
Airamri, and Mandalpara under Badarganj upazila, Kantabari, Palichora,
Ramjiban under Sadar upazila and some other villages under Pirganj
upazila, he said.
According to the market source and farmers, harvest of Haribhanga
mango began from early June when its average per kg price stood at
Taka 70 while the price rose up to Taka 300 per kg at the end of
harvest by third week of July this year.
Haribhanga mango farmers Mahbubul Alam, Abdus Salam, Jahangir Hossain
Bablu Master and Nur Islam told BSS that they have achieved complete
economic self-reliance through farming the highly profitable mango in
recent years.
Expressing his satisfaction over the success achieved so far in
farming Haribhanga mango, Additional Director of the DAE Sikander Ali
said cultivation of the mango would further increase in Rangpur and
adjoining areas in the coming years.
“The success in expanding cultivation of Haribhanga mango has been
achieved following dissemination of the latest technologies by
officials and experts of the DAE among growers for better agronomical
managements in recent years,” he added.
He also suggested the farmers and all concerned for further expanding
cultivation of prospective Haribhanga mango that has huge export
potentials to earn foreign exchange for the nation in the near future.
