Stating that people of no religion are now safe under the current government, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday night alleged that the real perpetrators of the recent secret killings remained untouched as they belong to the ruling party.
“No one involved in the recent killings of so many people have so far been arrested as they belong to the ruling Awami League,” she said. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.
The BNP chief came up with the remarks while exchanging greetings with a delegation of the Buddhist community marking the Buddha Purnima at her Gulshan office.
Referring to the recent murder of Buddhist monk in Bandarban, Khaleda alleged that though Awami League speaks about secularism, it actually does not believe in it as it kills people of all religions.
She said the government has pushed the country to the brink of destruction by resorting to killings, enforced disappearances, and abductions and indulging in plundering and corruption.
Turning to the ongoing Union Parishad polls, Khaleda said the recent elections have once again proved that no free and fair election is possible under the present government.
“Is there any election atmosphere now in the country? Can we call it as election what has happened in the union parishad in the name of it?” she said.
The BNP chief also questioned the role of Awami and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the country’s Liberation War, saying the party had not dared to declare the country’s independence. “It’s Ziaur Rahman who had proclaimed the country’s independence while they (AL leaders) crossed the border. Can anyone become fighter without fighting? Therefore, they (AL leaders) are not freedom fighters. BNP is the party of freedom fighters,” she said.
Without mentioning the name of Bangabandhu, Khaleda said, “The person who was supposed to proclaim the independence went to Pakistan with pies (cigarette holder)…He had always tried to be the Prime Minister of Pakistan, not Bangladesh.”
Expressing her deep sympathy over the loss of lives in Cyclone Roanu, the BNP chief also called upon the party’s leaders and activists to stand beside the cyclone affected people.
