‘Reasons behind Gazipur debacle will be probed’

Minister for Communication Obaidul Quader on Sunday said they would probe the reasons at party level behind the defeat in the Gazipur City
Corporation election. He said this while talking to reporters on the just concluded Gazipur election at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The 14-party backed candidate Azmot Ullah Khan was defeated by his rival and 18-party backed candidate Prof MA Mannan with a huge margin
of votes.
The Communications Minister identified lack of peoples’ confidence as a reason behind the defeat of their candidate.
The people didn’t cast their votes for us but we accepted the mandate of people. We didn’t try to change the result forcibly, he said.
Quader said after the election, the allegations of the opposition BNP of rigging votes proved wrong and baseless.
He however said that we have to take lesson from this election and the party is in the progress to correct the wrong doings.
The Minister further said after nineties it is found that people reject those who run the election remaining in power.
It is a negative approach and we have to work for creating positive trend among the people.
Replying to a question he said there is nothing to identify as fort of votes; as the people can break any fort if they want.
Asked whether the city corporation poll will cast any negative impact on the national election, he said it is early to make any comment since there are four months to go for the national polls.
The AL has got the opportunity to take lesson from the election. It should be utilised. The strategy for the next election will be determined keeping in mind as to how the people’s confidence can be regained, he added.
