Recognise govt as legal for dialogue: Hanif

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Saturday said that dialogue can take place with BNP if it recognizes the government as legal.
“BNP has to take decision on the legitimacy of the incumbent government. Dialogue can take place with BNP if it recognizes the government as a legal one. Or else no dialogue will take place,” he said while addressing a workers meeting of Kurigram district Awami League at local Public Library premises.Hanif noted that although BNP terms the government as ‘illegal’, it is vigorously preparing to take part in the upcoming upazila polls.
Turning to his own party’s matters with regard to the upazilla elections that will be held later this month, Hanif said instructions had been sent to select a single candidate in each upazila shunning differences.
“Stern action will be taken if anyone takes part in the polls disregarding the party decision,” he added.
About banning the politics of Jamaat-e-Islami, Hanif said, “Meanwhile Jamaat established itself as a terrorist outfit. A case was pending in the court regarding ban on its politics. The people’s demand will be implemented if the case is settled.”
The ruling AL leader said, “Awami League doesn’t bow down to any sort of foreign pressure, rather gives importance to public pressure and their desire. We’ve no scope to think about anyone pressure apart from the public.” – UNB
