Regulator indeed – Cell coverage to Khaleda’s office restored

Khaleda Zia’s office yesterday came under the coverage of GrameenPhone as the connection was restored at Gulshan-2 and Baridhara enclave.
Shamsuddin Didar, member of BNP chairperson’s media wing confirmed it saying that they are now getting Grameen Phone connection.
He said the Teletalk network was available in the office before and now connection of Grameen Phone is resumed but the connections of other mobile phones and Internet are still unavailable.Bangladesh Telecommunications Regularity Commission (BTRC) yesterday in a letter informed that telecom operators that it has restored all the connections in Gulshan and Baridhadra.
The letter said, “It is learnt that some of the diplomatic missions in Baridhara/Ghulshan area, particularly of Japan, Spain, and the Netherlands, are facing complete obstructions of mobile phone communications.”
Being directed, the BTRC asked the telecom operators to immediately restore mobile phone communications of all diplomatic missions in that area, while rendering your full cooperation to the Law Enforcing Agencies.
Sources said the other mobile phone operators would also restore their connection in the Gulshan and Baridhara area very soon.
All the telecommunication networks including Internet, telephone and cable networks were curtailed from the office of Khaleda Zia since January 31.
The idea of having the BTRC in place of the erstwhile T&T Board as both operator and regulator was to protect customers from whimsical behaviour of the telephone service providers while ensuring fair competition among them.
In this case however consumers of Gulshan 2 and Baridhara areas suffered from being disconnected from the cell and internet networks at the instance of the BTRC which did hurriedly order disconnection of their services to Khaleda’s office. How it managed to do this remains unexplained.
Meanwhile, more barbed wires were brought to the BNP chairperson’s office to complete the security fencing around the office. The work to erect barbed wires on the other parts of the walls began in the afternoon, according to office sources.
Earlier on Wednesday, barbered wires were erected on the boundary walls of office at its western and northern parts.
Khaleda Zia is staying in her office from January 3 when she was prevented from going out to visit an ailing colleague Rizvi Ahmed at party’s central office on the day and not to allow her to join a party rally in front of its headquarters at Naya Paltan to mark the first anniversary of January 5 poll that it had boycotted. – Staff Reporter
