Remarks against anti-militancy drives encourage militancy: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Sunday said irresponsible remarks by some political leaders against anti-militancy drives encourage militancy.

“Irresponsible remarks by several political leaders against anti-militancy drives drew my attention. Such statements encourage militant activities,” he said.

He came up with the remarks at a programme at the Police Headquarters arranged for providing money to the family members of the two police officials killed at militant den ‘Atia Mahal’ at Shibbari in Dakkhin Surma upazila in Sylhet district.

He said the anti-militancy drive is underway and it will continue. Legal actions will be taken against the mentors of militancy, said the IGP.

The IGP said police have set big examples of sacrifice in recent drive against militant groups.

He also urged all to help police carry out the anti-militancy drive.

Ten people, including four militants and two police officials, were killed and at least 40 people injured in thee incidents, including a bomb blast near Atia Mahal, during 83-hour long ‘Operation Twilight’ on the militant den from March 24 to March 28.
