Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that her Cabinet colleagues have
‘only expressed their desire to resign’– and the resignations would
be effective only if the President accepts them.
This was the Prime Minister’s first reactions on the controversy over
the resignations of her Cabinet colleagues.
“Resignation does not become effective if the letter is handed over to
the Prime Minister. The President has a role in it,” Hasina told an
event at the Dhaka University.
The Prime Minister said: “They (ministers) will remain in their
positions until the President accepts the resignations.”
Ministers in her cabinet submitted ‘undated’ resignations to the Prime
Minister on Monday to facilitate formation of an ‘all-party’
government to oversee the next parliament poll.
Many including the main opposition BNP have claimed the resignations
become effective the moment they are tendered.
Hasina said on Thursday that those who said that have ‘not read the
Constitution properly’.
She cited former junior minister Tanjim Ahmed Sohel Taj’s instance.
“He was in his post until I accepted his resignation.”
About the ‘all-party’ government, the Prime Minister said that the
interim cabinet ‘would be a smaller one’.
“The Prime Minister will advise the President on whom to pick and whom
to strike out (from the Cabinet). The resignations will be effective
once the President accepts it,” she said.
