Voicing deep concern over the growing secret killings, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday urged the government to ‘restore’ democracy and forge a national unity to check the dangerous threat of extremism and militancy in the country.“Annihilating democracy and showing intolerance to alternative views are the main reasons behind the rise in communalism, terrorism and militancy in the country…let’s sit together and reach an understanding to protect our country,” he said.
Fakhrul came up with the remarks while speaking at an extended meeting of Thakurgaon district unit BNP at its office.
He said Bangladesh has become devoid of politics as the government has completed all its preparations to re-establish one-party rule.
Accusing the government of destroying the country’s all democratic institutions, the BNP leader said the Election Commission, one of the main institutions of democracy, has now become a ‘ruling party commission’.
He said the government through the Union Parishad polls demonstrated that it wants election to be held in the country without any opposition party.
Fakhrul urged the government to restore normal political atmosphere in the country shunning the politics of vengeance, killing and enforced disappearance.
“It won’t be possible to suppress the political opponents by resorting to repressive acts. Create a democratic atmosphere in the country to resist killings, anarchy and terrorism,” he said pointing at the government.
