Risk reduction in disaster-prone areas for food security stressed

There is no alternative to adaptation with climate change impacts to
reduce risk and vulnerability in the disaster-prone backward areas for
ensuring food security and livelihoods of the poor and disadvantaged
population.
The views were expressed at a project inception workshop on ‘Reduce
vulnerability of the poor and disadvantaged population due to climate
change impacts in the northwest part of Bangladesh’ on Monday at RDRS
Training Centre in Chilmari of Kurigram.
RDRS Bangladesh organised the daylong workshop to launch
implementation of the new project under financial assistances of the
Community Climate Change Project (CCCP) of Polli Karmo Sahayak
Foundation.
The NGO will implement the three-year term (July 21, 2013 to July 20,
2016) project in the flood-, erosion and disaster-prone Chilmari,
Ulipur, Rajibpur and Roumari upazilas in Kurigram and Sadar,
Kishoreganj and Jaldhaka upazilas in Nilphamari districts.
The main objective of the project is to build up stress tolerant
communities in poverty- and disaster-prone backward areas to ensure
food security and livelihoods of the hardcore poor, distressed men and
women through reducing climate change risks.
In the first year, the project will be implemented to benefit 4,000
vulnerable and hardcore poor people in 40 villages under Chilmari
Sadar, Ramna, Raniganj, Noyarhat, Ostomirchar and Thanahat unions of
Chilmari upazila in Kurigram.
With Kurigram Programme Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Shariful Islam
Khan in the chair, Chilmari UNO Mohammad Mamun-Ul-Hassan addressed the
workshop as the chief guest.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur
Rashid delivered welcome speech narrating goals and objectives of the
project.
Project Coordinator (CCCP) of the NGO Shafiul Islam presented keynote
paper narrating the project activities and its implementation
strategies in the disaster-prone areas under adverse climate to cope
with the situation.
Chilmari Upazila Agriculture Officer Nazrul Islam, Upazila Women
Affairs Officer Sokhina Begum, upazila vice-chairman Marjina Begum,
General Secretary of Chilmari Press Club Shyamol Kumar Barman, took
part in the open discussion.
All six union parishad chairmen and members, government and NGO
officials, presidents of different RDRS Federations, civil society
members, community leaders, victims of river erosion and climate
change impacts and local elite participated.
The speakers stressed for adopting proper planning, improving decision
making, facilitating knowledge exchange and learning for
implementation of the project to upgrade living standard of hardcore
poor in erosion-, poverty-and disaster-prone areas.
They stressed for comprehensive efforts of the government and
non-government organizations in coping with climate change and
improving economy and life standard of the affected people through
ensuring food security and livelihoods. –BSS, Rangpur
