River erosion devours 11 primary schools in Rajshahi

Eleven government primary schools were devoured by the river erosion in three districts under Rajshahi division during the current year’s flood.

Of the total devoured schools, eight in Sirajgonj, two in Bogra and one in Naogaon, divisional office of Department of Primary Education (DPE) said.

Abul Khayer, Divisional Deputy Director of DPE, said highest numbers of primary school were affected in Sirajgonj. In addition to devouring schools, the floodwater affected more than 260 other schools. Academic activities remain halted in 139 schools and 32 schools are being used as flood shelters.

The primary schools in Bogra district face loss badly. Two schools were washed away by the river erosion. Academic activities remain stopped in 76 schools due to inundation. Apart from, 10 schools are being used as flood shelters.

In Naogaon, around 148 schools were affected by the deluge besides devouring one school.

Academic activities remained halted in 160 schools and 50 others are being used as flood shelters.

Apart from, 668 schools were affected by the flood in five other districts under the division and floodwater entered into 547 schools. Besides, 110 schools are being used as flood shelters.

Abul Khayer said extent of losses in each of the schools is being assessed by the concerned district primary education office. After flood, renovation works will be done to make the affected schools fit for academic activities, he expected, reports BSS, Rajshahi.
