Rivers start eroding banks in Faridpur

A vast area of crop land and embankment covering Sadar and
Charbhadrasan upazillas of the istrict have come under the threat of
erosion of river Padma since June 2 with the advent of monsoon.
According to Water Development Board (WDB) and concerned union
parishad Chairmen, about two kilometers from Signboard area to
Hajiganj Bazar were devoured by the erosion.
Cropland with oil seed ‘Teel’, groundnut, coconut trees, bamboo groves
and betel nut trees were already eroded in the river during the last
week. Besides, several portions of Faridpur Sadar-Charbhadrasan Road
via Gajaria were also devoured in the river Padma.
According to the sources, the western portion of famous Hajiganj bazar
is also threatened by the erosion. Locals opined that if protective
measures are not taken immediately more damages might occur including
loss of homesteads of the localities. According to WDB sources, no
protective measure is possible to take right now as the water level is
rising in the river. However, they are ready to take some measures if
any important installation come under the threat of erosion, the
sources added.
