RMG workers block Dhaka-Aricha highway demanding arrears

Agitated workers of a readymade garment factory on Tuesday blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway for at least five hours demanding their arrears.

Around 600 workers of ‘Abbas Apparels’ blocked the highway at Savar Bus stand around 10:30 am and later withdrew it around 3:30 pm after the local MP Enamur Rahman assured them of resolving the matter.

The protesting workers said they did not get any salary since January while the authorities had failed to fulfill their promises several times.

Lastly, the authority was scheduled to pay the arrears on Tuesday morning which they also declined later, the workers alleged.

Officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station Mohsinul Kadir said they had tried to contact the authorities concerned but failed as the owner of the factory Abbas Uddin was on the run.

Meanwhile, a 10-kilometer tailback was created on the highway since the morning due to the blockade of five hours triggering great suffering to the commuters.
