RMG workers continue protests for minimum wage 50 injured

Readymade garment workers, protesting for a third consecutive day, clashed with police in Dhaka and Savar on Tuesday, leaving dozens of people injured.
They have been demanding cancellation of what they call a ‘discriminatory wage board’ announced by the government for them.In Savar, at least 50 RMG workers and policemen were injured in clashes during demonstrations at Hemayetpur in the morning. The confrontation lasted for about three hours.
Police and protesters said the workers of Shams Style Wears Limited factory abstained from work and demonstrated at Padmar Mor area in the morning. They were soon joined by workers from some other nearby RMG factories.
They tried to block the Hemayetpur-Shyampur road with burning tyres but police chased them, triggering a running battle. Gunshots were also reported during the clashes. Police charged batons and used water cannons on the workers to disperse them.
Additional policemen have been deployed in the area.In Uttara, workers started to gather in front of their respective factories from 9am and tried to block the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Uttarkhan and Dakhshinkhan areas.But police foiled their attempts. Later, RMG workers vandalised several factories in the area, creating panic among the locals.
Meanwhile, police and protesting RMG workers fought pitched battles on Kalshi road in Mirpur around noon, disrupting vehicular movement.RMG workers also demonstrated in Pallabi, halting traffic for several hours in the morning.
