Road digging increases sufferings in Sylhet

Dilapidated roads have become causes of public sufferings, and
obstacles to the smooth movement of vehicles in the Sylhet city. Road
digging by the different utility services continue overlooking request
made by the Sylhet City Corporations to coordinate their activities.
The Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) and Sylhet
Power distribution Company (SPDC) have been digging roads for
development purposes for months together without talking public
sufferings into account.
The roads from Bondor to Amberkhana, Uposhahar, Rikabibazar, Lamapara,
Jail Road, Shibgonj, Mirabazar Kin Bridge to Kodomtoly, Gutatikor,
Patanpara, Lawai, and Bangobir main road and  Technical road are in
the worst condition
Md. Sumon, a resident of Patanpara said, people of the area were
facing serious problem in their movement as most of the roads were not
repaired though the work for installation underground cable system in
the area had been finished several months ago The rickshaw pullers are
reluctant to go by these roads in the area because of their vulnerable
condition. Taking advantage thereof, the rickshaw pullers charge
double fare, he said.
The road digging work that started at the beginning of the current
financial year has left many roads almost unuseable in many areas of
the city. Besides, the monsoon rains have aggravated the condition, he
added The city is witnessing accidents and severe traffic congestion
most frequently because of the dilapidated condition of roads.
Chief Engineer of Sylhet City Corporation told The New Nation that the
city corporation faces problems when such organizations take long time
for their work. In many cases, they cannot complete their work within
the stipulated time given by the corporation It is alleged that due to
the lack of coordination between the city corporations and different
utility service providers, road digging contributes to severe traffic
jam.
