The indefinite strike, called by the general students of Rajshahi University (RU) protesting fee hike and opening of evening programmes there, is going on for the third consecutive day today (Saturday). Sources at RU said several thousand students brought out a procession on the campus around 10:30am in support of their agitation, which marched different roads inside the campus. Later, the students under the banner of ‘Students and teachers against increased fees and evening courses’ locked the academic building, in front of which they were due to put up a barricade. No classes or examinations were held at the university on the day. The agitating students vowed to continue their protest until their demands were met. They also threatened to go for a tougher movement if the demands went unheeded. The students have been staging demonstration on the campus since January 16 protesting the authorities’ decision to increase their fees many folds and to introduce evening programmes at the university. The students on Thursday went on a strike for an indefinite period to press for their demands, halting all types of routine activities at the university. – UNB
