Sao Paulo appoint Diniz as head coach

Sao Paulo (Xinhua/UNB) — Former Fluminense manager Fernando Diniz has been named head coach of Sao Paulo for the rest of the Brazilian Serie A season. The 45-year-old replaces Alexi Stival, better known as Cuca, who was sacked after the team’s 1-0 home loss to Goias on Wednesday.

Sao Paulo did not provide further details of the contract in a brief statement on the club’s official website.

The six-time Brazilian Serie A champions are currently sixth in the 20-team league standings, 13 points behind leaders Flamengo.

They have won just one of their past six matches, despite the arrivals of Brazil captain Dani Alves and former Spain international full-back Juanfran in August.

Diniz has been out of work since parting ways with Fluminense on August 19. His first match in charge of Sao Paulo will be a clash with Flamengo at Rio’s Maracana Stadium on Saturday. UNB
