SC upholds verdict for demolishing BGMEA building

The Supreme Court (SC) today upheld a High Court order that asked for demolishing the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) headquarters building in Hatirjheel area in the capital, declaring it as illegal.A four-member Appellate Division panel of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order today, rejecting an appeal filed by BGMEA against the High Court verdict of 2011.
“Now there is no legal bar in demolishing the building,” said lawyer Manzill Murshid, who acted as an amicus curie during the hearing, told the newsmen.
The High Court in 2011 ordered to demolish the building, terming it as cancer for the scenic Hatirjheel project. After the release of the full text of the judgment, BGMEA filed an appeal against the order.
