Search panel seeks 5 names from each pol party

Dhaka, Jan 28 – The search committee formed by President Abdul Hamid for reconstituting the next Election Commission on Saturday asked the 31 political parties which took part in talks with the President to propose 5 names within Tuesday.The search committee requested the political parties to submit the names to the additional secretary of the Cabinet Division, cabinet secretary Shafiul Alam told reporters after the first meeting of the committee at the SC Judges’ Lounge at 11 am on Saturday.
The search committee members will also sit with 12 eminent citizens of the country at 4 pm on Monday, he said.
The 12 citizens are former High Court judge Abdur Rashid, Professor Serajul Islam Chowdhury of Dhaka University, DU former Vice Chancellors – AK Azad Chowdhury and SMA Fayez, former Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, former Election Commissioners — Sahul Hossain and Brigadier General M. Sakhawat Hussain, local government expert Prof Tofail Ahmed, Sujon secretary Badiul Alam Majumder, DU Prof Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq, advocate Sultana Kamal and former IGP Nurul Huda, said Shafiul Alam.
President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday formed a six-member search committee, headed by Supreme Court’s Appellate Division judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, for reconstituting the new Election Commission (EC).
The search committee will recommend two names against each post, including at least a woman, to the President within 10 working days for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners.
Earlier the President held a month-long dialogue with 31 registered political parties on the formation of a new Election Commission (EC). The talks ended on January 18. – UNB
