Season of netting carp fries from Halda River begins Friday

The fishermen carry on their ancestral tradition by collecting roe of fishes in Halda River, the country’s only natural breading ground of carp species.

According to Integrated Development Foundation (IDF), the Halda River is unique and distinct due to genetical purity of fertilised spawn of Rui type fishes.

Simultaneously, this river also plays a significant role in providing livelihood of a huge number of people who are egg collectors and breeders and suppliers of freshwater fishes.

Carp are various species of oily freshwater fish from the family Cypronidae, a very large group of fish native to Europe and Asia.

Local fishermen started collecting roes of different fishes including Rui, Katla, Mrigel and Lakibaush from early Friday.

The mmother fishes started paying egg from the morning.

Hundreds of fishermen were seen collecting roes in the river as the weather was favourable since the morning.UNB
