Security beefed up in Sylhet ahead of Ramadan

Tough security measures have been taken by the police to ensure safety
of people and keep streets free from gridlock during the upcoming
Ramzan month and subsequent festival Eid-ul-Fitr in Sylhet.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police commissioner has instructed the chiefs of
different police units to keep the law and order under full control as
well as ensuring smooth traffic during the holy month of Ramzan. He
also issued directive to police officers to take effective measures to
control dacoities on highways.
Officials said, the police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will
enhance their patrol in the residential areas and will set up
makeshift camps near shopping malls and business centres. The security
personnel will also remain alert against illegal toll collection,
mugging, extortion and dope party.
Besides, the members of law enforcement and intelligence agencies will
be deployed at all the bus terminals, rail stations, river ports,
launch and ferry ghats across the Sylhet district as part of the
special security measure and resist ticket black marketing.
The law enforcers will keep vigil on road and water transports to
ensure that they are not overcrowded while plying on roads, highways
and waterways during Ramzan in order to avert accidents.
Mobile courts will be conducted in the capital and all other
metropolitan cities and the metropolitan police will take necessary
security steps coordinating with business bodies and owners of
markets, supermarkets and shops. Additional mobile courts will also
conduct drives to curb sales of adulterated foods.
Earlier on Monday, a meeting was held at Police Commissioner Office
presided over by Nibash Chandro Majhi to review the Sylhet areas law
and order. The meeting also discussed the traffic system, especially
severe gridlock that usually takes place in city roads and highways
during holy month of Ramzan and Eid-ul-Fitr.
The Members of RAB, SB and CID, and the DIGs of all ranges, all
Officer In charges and senior officers of the police attended the
meeting.
Meanwhile, the SMP officials said they have already launched special
drives against organised gangs to make the Eid celebration crime free.
