Seven people were killed when a truck loaded with rice lost control and fell into a ditch at Chittagong’s Mirsharai on Monday.Zorarganj police OC Jahidul Kabir said the accident happened around 5.30am near South Sonapahar on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.Those killed were travelling atop the truck, sitting on the rice bags loaded in it. They have been identified as Kamal Mia, 45, ‘Saiful’, 40, ‘Tipu’, 45, ‘Rubel’, 25, Manir Uddin, 45, ‘Alam’, 35 and ‘Azad’, 25.Locals told police that the driver lost control of the truck and it fell into a ditch by the highway, OC Kabir said.Scores of people are killed in road accidents in Bangladesh every year. Most of them are caused by rash driving, poor maintenance of vehicles, bad road conditions and difficult weather conditions like heavy rains or fog.
