Shia mosque gun attack: 3 on remand

A court here on Saturday placed three people, arrested in connection with the Thursday’s gun attack on a Shia mosque at Haripur village in Shibganj upazila, on remand of different terms.Anwar Hossain, 48, a former army man and a resident of Majhihatta village in the upazila and Jewel Miah, 25, of Harpur village were put on a seven-day remand each while Shamsul Alam, 60, principal of Molamgari Emdadul Ulum Qawmi Madrasah of the upazila, on a five-day remand.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shyem Sundar Das passed the order after police produced them before the court seeking a 10-day remand for them, said inspector (investigation) of Shibganj Police Station Qamruzzaman.

Police arrested Anwar and Jewel from different places of the district on Friday morning in connection with the attack while a DB team in another drive arrested Shamsul from his house with his son Abu Hasan, 24, on the same day.

On Thursday evening, a group of 4-5 unidentified gunmen stormed the mosque and opened fire on the devotees while they were offering their maghrib prayers, leaving four of them, including its muezzin Moazzem, injured with bullets.

The injured were taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where doctors declared muezzin of the mosque Moazzem dead.

The Shia community mosque is run under the supervision of Bogra chapter of Bangladesh Inamia Janakalyan Foundation.

A case was filed with Shibganj Police Station in this connection on the incident day.
