SI suspended over Chittagong teen suicide

Chittagong, July 21 – Sub-Inspector Helal Khan of Double Mooring Police Station was suspended for provoking a teenage boy to take his own life after harassing two female members of his family during a drive in Agrabad of Chattogram city on July 16.Mohammad Manjur Morshed, (DB west) deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), said SI Helal was suspended as he was found guilty according to the investigation report of the case.
Besides, a show-cause notice was served to the officer-in-charge of the Police Station, Swadeep Das in this connection. He has been asked to reply within seven days.
On Monday, a three-member probe body formed to investigate the incident submitted its report at night where it found SI Helal guilty.
The probe body also recommended taking departmental action against SI Helal after suspending him.
On July 16, an alteration took place between Helal and Salman Islam Maruf, 16, during a drive as SI Helal along with two others conducted a drive at Badamtoli intersection to arrest Maruf.
At one stage, Maruf’s mother and sister tried to snatch him away from police, triggering a scuffle.
Maruf however, managed to escape amid the scuffle. Later, police arrested Maruf’s mother and sister from the spot.
When Maruf came to know about the arrest of his mother and sister, he ‘killed himself’, sparking a protest. Locals then put up barricades on the road and staged demonstrations that night.
On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
