Sirajganj road crash kills 7

At least seven people, including five members of a family, were killed when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a truck collided head-on at Raiganj Upazila in Sirajganj district on Tuesday.Police said that the accident took place at around 12:30pm when a speeding truck rammed a CNG-run three-wheeler on the Sirajganj-Bogra Highway in Gorka Battala area of the Upazila, leaving four passengers of the auto-rickshaw dead on the spot and injuring three others.
Locals rushed the injured to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
All the victims were passengers of the three-wheeler.
The rescue efforts were obstructed by heavy rain even as police were trying to cope up with the situation.
The deceased were identified as Shefali Khatun, 30, wife of Nil Chand of Radhanagar village of Raiganj Upazila, their daughter Sumaiya Khatun, 7, Shefali’s younger brother ‘Uzzal’, 28, his wife Ojeda Khatun Lucky, 25, their 11-month-old daughter Urmila Khatun, auto-rickshaw driver Ripon, son of late Parosh a member of the Upazila’s Shahebganj area, and Aminul Islam, 40, son of Sajid Uddin of Radhanagar village.
Officer-In-Charge of the Hatikumrul Highway Police Outpost Ali Farid Ahmed told bdnews24.com that the agitated locals vandalised the truck and put barricade on the highway immediately after the accident.
Vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended for about three hours. The traffic operation resumed after 4:30pm.
The driver of the truck managed to flee from the scene.
A case was filed over the incident.
