President of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh Prof Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Tuesday urged the Prime Minister to cancel the 10th Parliament elections and sit across the table for holding the next general polls.
“All countries of the globe except only one observed that the January 5 election was not held in a proper manner. Being provoked by the government, the Election Commission deceived the people,” he said at a press conference of the newly formed National Democratic Front (NDF) at the National Press Club.The former President urged the government to form upper house, hold election under a non-party government and withdraw the restriction on holding rallies, meetings, seminar and symposiums.
He also called upon the opposition to stop non-stop hartal, blockade programmes, violence and torching.
The NDF leader said the government deprived about five crore people of their voting rights. “Of the rest four crore voters, only 2.5 per cent people exercised their right to frenchise. But it was not fair for the EC to take four days to find out percentage of the turnout of voters,” he observed.
B Chowdhury criticized the EC for its subservient role in holding the polls and said the EC has deceived the people.
He said there in no precedence of such election in the history of democracy. “Ninety five percent of people were insulted and Bangladesh was defeated in the democratic test by holding he polls,” he added.
B Chowdhury mentioned the prime minister moved around the country by confining the opposition leader Khaleda Zia at her residence and sending Jatiya Party president HM Ershad at the Golf ground.
Despite this, the prime minister did not feel ashamed to be the prime minister of five per cent votes and did not express her regret, he said.
The Bikalpa Dhara leader also criticised the prime minister for terming the voters who did not take part in the polling as rajakars and urged her to withdraw the statement.
He said the people do not want Sheikh Hasina in power further.
President of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) ASM Rob said the spirit of war of liberation as been destroyed by holding the lection. The countrymen do not believe the prime minister for the election of deception.
President of Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Janata League (BKSJL) Bangabir Kader Siddiqui, Bir Uttam, said the movement of torching would not be successful.
He called upon all to express their solidarity under the umbrella of NDF which was formed comprising Bikalpa Dhara, JSD and BKSJL.
JSD general secretary Abdul Malek Raton read out the written statement. Bikalpa Dhara secretary general Maj (Retd) Abdul Mannan, BKSJL leader Habibur Rahman Talukder, among others, were present on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
