Steps taken to release 35 fishermen from Indian jail

The Barguna district administration has stepped up efforts to release 35 Bangladeshi fishermen from Indian jails with the help of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Indian navy and coastguards held 17 fishermen of Barguna district and 18 of Pautakhali district while they were fishing in the Bay of Bengal on November 7.The navy and coastguards sized the trawlers used by the fishermen and then took them to India.The arrested fishermen are now in Alipur Central Jail under 24 Parganas district, Barguna district administration and district Fishing Trawlers Owners Association sources said.Meanwhile, about 200 Indian fishermen were arrested with their fishing trawlers recently while they had been fishing after illegally entering Bangladesh territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal. -BSS, Barguna
