Students vow to eradicate child marriage in Gangachara

Students of Gangachara Degree College and Gangachara B M College at separate rallies have vowed for launching social movement to eradicate child marriage and repression on women and children.
Gangachara Public Library organised the rallies followed by discussions in these two institutions on Saturday as a part of its ongoing campaign against child marriage and signature collection programme in the upazila.Students, teachers, guardians, youths, public representatives, adolescents, socio-cultural and women activists, marriage registrars, religious leaders and NGO activists took part in the colourful rallies that paraded the streets in the upazila town.President of Gangachara Public Library Shakil Akbar presided over the post-rally discussions held separately at Gangachara Degree College and Gangachara B M College grounds.Principal of Gangachara Degree College Nurun Nabi Rana, Upazila Family Planning Officer Shahadat Hossain, Lecturers Ali Mortuza and Shyamol Roy, President of Gangachara Press Club Shaju Ahmed, Sub-inspector Nurunnabi Pradhan, addressed.Local elite Sabuz Ali, Convener of the Campaign Convening Committee Rafiur Rahman Pappu, General Secretary of Gangachara Public Library Asaduzzaman Tareq, a number of students of the educational institutions and local elite also addressed the discussions.All male and female students of the two colleges took oath to create public awareness through narrating negative impacts of child marriage, dowry, domestic violence and repression to resist these social curses for building a better society.Thanking the students, the speakers narrated the reasons and superstitions behind these social curses that have engulfed the society, especially the poorer section people in the backward areas, for decades together creating unrest in family life and society.They called upon all concerned, including the students, teachers and guardians, to set up an example of not arranging any child marriage to free the upazila from the social curse through collective initiatives and rectifying their past mistakes.BSS, Rangpur
