Sudden heavy rain disrupts normal city life

Torrential rains lashed the city on Monday evening leaving the traffic in collapse and the normal life in disarray as many streets went under knee-deep waters.   The streets in areas like Gulistan, Shanir Akhra, Demra-Beribadh, Gendaria, Shahjahanpur, Fakirerpool, Shantinagar, Malibagh, Nayapaltan, Motijheel, Rajarbagh, Rampura and Badda, were hit hard by the rain.
Tailbacks were created at different points of the city, including Malibagh, Shantinagar, Mouchak and Moghbazar as the clogged drains failed to flush out the rainwater.   Some 10 mms of rain were recorded at the Met Office at Agargaon today, an observer at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department told UNB.
He said the rainfall may also occur allover the country, including Dhaka, during the next 24 hours.   Many commuters were seen crossing roads wading through the rainwater. Many of them complained that rickshaws and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers charged them excessive fares, taking advantage of the rain-hit roads.
“I came to Malibagh from Gulistan on foot. As the city roads are flooded with rainwater disrupting the traffic system, I was compelled to walk through the waterlogged streets,” Masud Jordar, a city commuter, said.
The manholes or potholes added to the sufferings as vehicles and pedestrians stumbled on them and fell in the water.   Water stagnations were created in many pocket areas of the city like Razarbagh, Shantinagar, Rampura and Malibagh for lack of operational sewerage system, worsening the sufferings of the commuters.   Shopping malls and other businesses witnessed the thin presence of customers in the evening as the sudden rain hit the city. – UNB
