Supreme Court Bar Association election begins

Dhaka, March 11 – A total of 3,031 votes out of 7,781 were cast on the first day of two-day voting to Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections of 2020-2021 session. The voting started at Shaheed Shafiur Rahman Auditorium of SCBA after 10 am and continued till 5 pm.
Lawyers will also cast their votes from 10:00 am till 5:00 pm today at the same place to elect a 14-member executive committee, including its president and secretary.
During the elections, many lawyers chanted slogan in favour of their candidates. But, many neutral lawyers were seen to chant slogan for Shah Monjurul Hoque, who got nomination from the pro-AL panel for the post of secretary, saying that Hoque has given many promises including the continuing the development process of the Supreme Court and enhancing the professional capacity of the lawyers.
Many lawyers said that Shah Monjurul Hoque is a gentle and qualified lawyer and he would able to fulfil his electoral promises if he would be elected as the secretary of the SCBA.
Sources said that the key contest will be held between candidates from the ruling Awami League-backed white panel and the BNP-backed blue panel.
The pro-AL panel has nominated Advocate AM Aminuddin and Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque as candidates for the posts of president and secretary respectively.
The BNP-backed panel has finalised Advocate Zainul Abedin and Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal as president and secretary candidates respectively.
Advocate Md Eunus Ali Akond will contest as an independent candidate for the post of president.
SCBA election is being held under the supervision of a sub-committee for election, headed by a former advisor of caretaker government Advocate AF Hassan Arif. – Staff Reporter
