‘Sweeping remarks’ against justices, judges irk CJ

Chief Justice M Mozammel Hossain on Monday urged all concerned not to create any controversy over the court by making sweeping remarks against the justices and judges.“Don’t make the court premises controversial by raising indiscriminate complaints. Let the judiciary retain its position as the last resort of people,” he said.

The Chief Justice was addressing a discussion meeting marking the 8th death anniversary of former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president advocate Shamsul Haque at its auditorium.

Mozammel Hossain said this in response to the remarks of senior lawyer ABM Nurul Islam regarding the corruption of the court her made earlier at the discussion meeting.

The Chief Justice said he will take steps if any complaint against anyone is brought to his notice, but cannot approve of the wholesale remarks against the justices and judges.

He observed that irrespective of their involvement with any political party outside the court, all the lawyers bear only one identity – they are lawyers.

“Judges have many limitations. Judges are blind. Judges can’t speak on their own although they might have problems. They are like a dead corpse. Judges can’t stage any protest. They don’t have the scope. But all the Judges are independent regarding the judgment,” he added.

Presided over by Bangladesh Bar Council former vice chairman advocate Abdul Baset, the discussion meeting was also addressed by senior lawyers advocate KM Saifuddin, ZI Khan Panna and SCBA former general secretary Mahbub Ali. (Source: UNB)
