Dhaka – Awami League Presidium member Syeda Zohra Tajuddin, also wife of country’s first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad, died of old-age complications at a city hospital on Friday morning. She was 80. She breathed her last at the United Hospitals around 10:20 am, said her daughter Simeen Hossain Rimi, MP. Hospital sources said Zohra Tajuddin was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday with various complications. Three weeks ago, she underwent a surgery at Medicity Medanta in Gurgaon, a satellite city of Delhi.
The veteran Awami League leader is likely to be buried at Banani Graveyard in the city on Sunday after her son Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj and other family members return home from abroad.
Her body was kept at the mortuary of the United Hospitals following two namaz-e-janazas in the city.
Her first janaza was held after Asr prayers on the compound of Gulshan Azad Mosque while the second one on the Bangabandhu Avenue after Maghrib prayers.
During the second janaza, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to Syeda Zohra Tajuddin by placing a wreath at her coffin kept in front of the AL central office at the Bangabandhu Avenue.
Leaders of Awami League and its associate bodies, including Jubo League, Chhatra League, Sramik League, Swechchhasebak League and Mohila Awami League, and Dhaka City Awami League also placed wreaths at her coffin.
President Abul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia expressed deep shock at the death Syeda Zohra Tajuddin.
In separate messages, they prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday paid homage to veteran politician and Awami League presidium member Syeda Zohra Tajuddin by placing wreaths on her coffin kept in front of the AL central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city.
After placing a wreath on the coffin at about 5:14 PM, the Prime Minister stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the memory of late Zohra Tajuddin.
A munajat was offered on the occasion seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Zohra Tajuddin, also the wife of the country’s first Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed.
Former Adviser to the Prime Minister HT Imam, Awami League leaders Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Engr Mosharraf Hossain, Satish Chandra Roy, Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, Syed Ashraful Islam and Dr Abdur Razzaque, and PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were, among others, present on the occasion.
