Tangail-8 by-polls Saturday: Curtain falls on electioneering

The curtain falls on Tangail-8 by-election campaign on Thursday midnight, 32 hours before the voting opens.
Five candidates — Anupam Shahjahan of the ruling Awami League, Sadek Siddiqui of JP (Manju) and independent Abdul Malek (AL rebel) and Principal Abu Sayeed (AL rebel) and Liaqat Ali — are contesting the by-polls slated for Saturday.
The Tangail-8 seat (Basail-Sakhipur) fell vacant following the death of AL MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan, father of Anupam Shahjahan, on January 20.A total of 307,382 voters, including 145,576 men and 161,806 women, can exercise their franchise at 711 booths of 117 polling stations in the by-election to the parliamentary constituency 137, Tangail-8. Of them, 119,077 voters under 49 polling stations in Basail upazila that comprised of a municipality and six union parishads, and 188,305 voters under 68 polling stations in Sakhipur upazila that comprised of a municipality and eight union parishads.
On February 13, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the by-election. – UNB
