Tarique Rahman, ETV chief Salam charged with sedition

Police have brought charges of sedition against BNP leader Tarique Rahman and Ekushey Television Chairman Abdus Salam.
A case was filed on Thursday over live telecast of a speech the BNP’s senior vice-chairman delivered in a programme at London three days ago.
BNP’s senior vice chairman Tarique, who has been in the UK since 2008, has been making statements at programmes about Bangladesh’s history and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur R ahman. The ruling Awami League leaders and workers have sharply reacted to those and have prevented the BNP from holding s rally at Gazipur demanding and apology  from Tarique for those.The High Court on Wednesday embargoed reporting his comments in the Bangladeshi media.  Salam is in prison in another case.
Tejgaon police Sub-Inspector Borhan Uddin brought the treason charges on Thursday evening, duty officer SI Abdul Halim said.
The duo threatened the country’s sovereignty and tried to create hatred against a legally constituted government by broadcasting and uttering false and fabricated information, he said.
They had also tried to create a rift in the judiciary and internal conflicts within the army, border guards and police, according to the case document. -bdnews24.com
