Tarique to be back home soon to lead party: BNP

BNP spokesman Shamsuzzaman Dudu on Monday said party senior vice-chairman
Tarique Rahman will be back home soon and take over its charge.“Tarique Rahman has already announced he’ll return soon. Our party also
expects he’ll be back home very soon and take over its charge and face
legally the allegations brought against him,” said Dudu.
Addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, the BNP
leader claimed that calling Tarique a fugitive is tantamount to contempt of
court as he has been undergoing treatment abroad with due permission of the
High Court.
“The government’s attitude has proved how the government got unnerved and
panicked by only a speech of a leader at meeting,” Dudu said pointing at
Tarique’s recent meeting in London and subsequent the government’s reaction.
The BNP spokesperson said Tarique Rahman, referring to media reports, told
the meeting that the government should accept people’s demand for
restoration of the caretaker government in the interest of the country.
“Juts this remark has made the government aggrieved and it swooped on him.”
Mentioning that everybody knows it very well that Tarique Rahman has been
in London for treatment with the permission of the High Court, he alleged
that the government is trying to brand him as a fugitive denying the facts.
Dudu also came down hard on Environment and Forests Minister Hasan Mahmud
for making indecent comments about Tarique Rahman, saying the minister
tried to identify Tarique with a very offensive word.
Describing the minister’s ‘impolite remarks’ do not suit his position, the
BNP leader said Hasan’s comment undermined the country, its politics and
history.
He urged the minister to withdraw his ‘offensive’ comments as it is an
ominous sign for the country. “You’re a PhD holder…try to set a good
example. Your choice of words as a minister belittles us to our wives and
children.”
Hasan reportedly compared Tarique with ‘Raghu Dakat’, a notorious bandit in
Bengali folklore, to describe him as a terrorist and corrupt person.
Meanwhile, Tarique Rahman on Monday sent a legal notice through his lawyer
to Hasan Mahmud for making “derogatory remarks” against him.
Barrister Kaisar Kamal sent the notice on behalf of Tarique, living in
London since 2008.
According to the notice, Hasan Mahmud, in a speech during the inauguration
of a commuter train service in Chittagong on May 25, compared Tarique
Rahman with ‘Raghu Dakat’ which was published in different newspapers the
following day. ( Source: UNB)
