The teachers can create mass public awareness for preventing the completely curable disease of tuberculosis that still kills 70,000-people annually in Bangladesh, speakers at a views-sharing meeting said yesterday.
National Anti-Tuberculosis Association of Bangladesh (NATAB) organised the meeting styled ‘Role of Teachers in Controlling Tuberculosis through Creating Public Awareness’ at Mofazzal Hosain High School in Kawnia upazila here. With Headmaster of the school Mohammad Aiyub Ali the chair, Assistant Surgeon of Kawnia Upazila Health Complex Dr Ruhul Amin Mukul addressed the meeting as the chief guest.
Medical Officer of the health complex Dr M Abu Kawser, its Medicine Consultant Dr Ansar Ali, members of district unit of NATAB Asaduzzaman Afzal and Abed Ali, Filed Level Staff of NATAB Monwar Hossain addressed as the special guests. In his speech, Dr Ruhul Amin Mukul highlighted the present national level status of the silent killer disease, steps taken by the government and various non-governmental and other organisations to free the country from tuberculosis.
He discussed the latest strategies for controlling tuberculosis and stressed for creating mass social awareness to accelerate detection of tuberculosis patients to bring them under cost-free treatments facilities.
The speakers discussed reasons behind tuberculosis infection and asked the teachers to eradicate tuberculosis through creating social awareness as there are adequate facilities at grassroots levels everywhere for free treatment of the infected patients.
They put special emphasis on conducting quick cough test if the symptoms of continuous cough, pain on body skin, weight loss, lack of appetite, night fever etcetera are found in any body for early detection and treatment of tuberculosis infection. The speakers stressed for taking preventive vaccines, effective and full course intake of essential medicines for eradicating the completely curable disease of tuberculosis from the country.
They called upon the teachers to inspire the tuberculosis patients to complete treatment doses at a stretch without intervals through adopting cost-free Direct Observe Treatment Short Course method and medicine to become fully cured. -BSS, Rangpur
