Thousands of people returning to the capital after celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr were left to suffer in a three-km tailback at Mawa Ferry Ghat due to heavy pressure of vehicles. Sirajul Haque, Manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Mawa, said 16 ferries, including three Ro-Ro ones, were ferrying the vehicles from Mawa to Kawrakandi. However, the number of ferries was insufficient compared to the pressure of vehicles at the ghat which led to a traffic jam at the ghat, he said. Sirajul said several hundred vehicles remained stuck in a three-km tailback at Mawa Ferry Ghat, causing immense sufferings to the passengers. Many passengers were seen to abandon their vehicles and cross the Padma River by speedboats to get a respite from the traffic jam.
