Pacer Kagiso Rabada’s world record of six wickets, including a hat-trick, on his ODI debut helped South Africa take 1-0 lead in the three-match National Polymer ODI Cricket Series as the Proteas beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the rain-hit first match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Friday.
The six-wicket haul of the 20-year-old, Kagiso Rabada, for 16 runs is the best figure in ODI on debut with the previous best figure of six for 22 runs held by Fidel Edwards.
Fidel Edwards took six wickets for 22 runs on his debut against Zimbabwe in Harare on November 29, 2003.Rabada’s hat-trick is the 3rd for South Africa in ODI after Charl Langeveldt in 2005 and Jean Paul Duminy in 2015. This is overall 39th hat-trick in the ODI format.
Kagiso Rabada dismissed Tamim, Liton Das and Mahmudullah in the 4th, 5th and 6th delivery of his second over to complete his hat-trick. He sent back the three batsmen for duck.
On his way to the six-wicket haul, Rabada also captured Soumya Sarkar, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Jubaier Hossain for 16 runs in his 8 overs spell.
Later, he was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant performance.
Chasing a target of 161 runs, the visitors reached the target scoring 164 runs for 2 in 31.1 overs riding on the unbeaten 3rd wicket stand of 99 runs in 18 overs between Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw.
Faf du Plessis scored team highest not out 63 runs off 75 balls with seven fours while Rilee Rossouw hit a four in the last ball of the innings to draw the winning line with his 45 runs off 53 balls featuring five fours and one six.
Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza made the breakthrough in his first over’s 3rd delivery claiming South Africa’s captain Hashim Amla (14 off 18, 2X4) who was caught by Mahmudullah at 22 in 5.3 overs.
Faf du Plessis paired with opener Quinton de Kock contributed 43 runs in 7.4 overs in the second wicket stand to carry the team total to 65.
All rounder Nasir Hossain dismissed the pair claiming Quinton de Kock who scored 35 runs off 41 balls with five fours and was caught by Sabbir Rahman.
Earlier, winning the toss, Bangladesh elected to bat first and scored 160 runs for all in 36.3 overs, riding on the world number one all rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s highest score of 48 runs off 51 balls with five fours.
Bangladesh clean finisher Nasir Hossain made 31 runs off 44 balls with three fours and the lone six of the innings before he was bowled out by Chris Morris at the end.
Shakib also contributed 53 runs in 12.3 overs pairing with Bangladesh Test skipper Mushfiqur Rahim in the fifth wicket stand after the departure of Soumya Sarkar at 40 in 7.2 overs.
Soumya Sarkar was caught by Jean Paul Duminny off a Kagiso Rabada bowling scoring run-a-ball 27 with four fours.
Mushfiqur Rahim was caught by Imran Tahir off a JP Duminy delivery scoring 24 runs off 38 balls with a four leaving the team total at 93 in 19.5 overs.
Number seven Sabbir Rahman who came to pair with Shakib was out for 5 off 13 balls.
Shakib followed Sabbir as he was bowled out off an Imran Tahir delivery at 120 in 25.1 overs.
Skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza (4 off 12 balls) and Jubaier Hossain (5 off 9 balls, 1X4) were captured by K Rabada.
Bangladesh faced an early jolt losing their three top order batsmen Tamim Iqbal, Liton Kumar Das and Mahmudullah for duck at 17.
Chris Morris grabbed two wickets for 32 runs while Jean Paul Daminy and Imran Tahir took one wicket each for 28 and 38 runs respectively.
The match was delayed by two hours and 40 minutes due to heavy rain. The game which was reduced to 40-over-a-side began at 5:40pm.- UNB
