Dhaka, July 2 (UNB) — Bangladesh’s dream to reach the semifinals of the ongoing ICC Men’s World Cup came to the end as they suffered a loss to India by 28 runs at Edgbaston on Tuesday. India, on the other hand, confirmed a place in the semifinals after Australia.
India put up a big total of 314 for nine in 50 overs while batting first after winning the toss relying on a century of Rohit Sharma. Bangladesh tumbled for 286 all-out in 48 overs and fell short of 28 runs.
Bangladesh started the chase putting up 39 runs in the first wicket stand. Tamim Iqbal was the first man to get dismissed off Mohammad Shami. Tamim tried to drive Shami to the point area but managed only an inside edge that shattered his stumps.
After Tamim, Soumya Sarkar and Mushfiqur Rahim fell respectively for 33 and 24. Both of them were settled in the middle but failed to carry the innings.
Shakib Al Hasan, who hit his fourth fifty in this World Cup on Tuesday, was the only man to offer some resistance. He struck 66 before falling prey to Hardik Pandya.
Dismissal of Mushfiqur and Shakib was enough to let Bangladesh down in the match. However, in the seventh wicket stand, Mohammad Saifuddin and Sabbir Rahman put up a partnership of 66 runs, which was the last hope for the Tigers.
But Jasprit Bumrah removed Sabbir for 36 off 36 balls and Bangladesh’s last hope was faded away.
In the ninth wicket stand, Saifuddin and Rubel Hossain added another 29 runs but that was not enough to seal the game. Saifuddin remained unbeaten for 51 off 38 with nine fours as Bangladesh tumbled for 286 all-out in 48 overs.
For India, Bumrah was impressive taking four wickets 55 runs while Hardik Pandya bagged three.
Rohit was the man of the match for his stunning 104, which was his fourth century in the World Cup.
Earlier, Indian opener Rohit hit his fourth century in the ongoing World Cup, giving his team a solid start. He was dropped on 7 by Tamim.
Rohit is now the only second batsman after Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara to hit four centuries in a single edition of the World Cup.
The Indian batsman also topped the list of most runs scorer (544) of this World Cup surpassing David Warner (516).
Rohit and Lokesh Rahul added 180 runs in the first-wicket stand after Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first.
Soumya earned a breakthrough for the Tigers by removing Rohit for 104. He tried to play Soumya’s delivery through the cover and gave an easy catch to Liton Das.
Rubel then removed Lokesh for 77 off 92. Lokesh prodded to the wicketkeeper, and Mushfiqur Rahim did not miss the catch.
During the 39th over, Mustafizur Rahman struck twice to remove Kohli and Hardik Pandya in a span of three balls and put the Tigers back in the game.
However, Rishabh Pant was in the wicket to show some glimpses of what he can really do. The 21-year-old struck 48 off 41 with six fours and one six to help his side pass the 300-run mark for the fifth time in this World Cup.
Eventually, India ended up on 314 for nine wickets in 50 overs. They scored only 63 runs in the last 10 overs.
Mustafizur took five wickets for 59 runs, and became the second Bangladeshi after Shakib to register a five-wicket haul in the World Cup. Shakib, Rubel and Soumya took one wicket each.
Before coming to this match, Bangladesh played seven games and won three of them while the other one was washed out due to rain. The Tigers lost in the other three matches.
Bangladesh will take on Pakistan in their last game of the World Cup on July 5 at Lord’s, London, while India will lock horns against Sri Lanka on July 6 at Headingley, Leeds.
